For hours, we watched Dania rest in her cave. Licking and scratching meant she might move soon. After a few false starts, she finally walked straight toward us, passing within twenty feet as if we did not exist. We watched her walk around the corner until she was out of sight. Pumas in Torres del Paine are habituated. They do not react to humans because humans do not present a threat. Pumas are protected here. However, once they step across the border into Argentina, they risk being killed by ranchers.
