Smolny Cathedral is one of many architectural masterpieces of the Italian architect Rastrelli, who also created the Winter Palace. It was originally intended to be the central church of a monastery, built to house the daughter of Peter the Great, Elizabeth, who decided to become a nun since she was not allowed to take the throne. However, she eventually did accept the throne, and abandoned being a nun, when her predecessor was overthrown during a coup.
