You might call this extortion but we called it a road block. A person (or group of people) blocks the road and says, "You cannot use this road unless you pay me one million rupiah (or a little over $100). Otherwise, I will stab you with this giant machete I have in my hand." Typically, it is someone who is bitter about not being selected as a porter. In the first few days of our trek to base camp, this happened from five to seven times per day. Good times in Papua.
